Endla Teater, Pärnumaa, Pärnu

type location

Endla is a professional theatre in city of Pärnu, Estonia.
The theatre was opened in 1911. The first performance was "Libahunt" ("Werewolf") by Estonian writer August Kitzberg. The Estonian Declaration of Independence was proclaimed from the theatre's balcony on 23 February 1918, one day before it was proclaimed in Tallinn. Endla was gutted by fire in 1944 and the Soviet authorities opted not to restore the theatre but to demolish it with explosives in 1961, due to it being an important symbol of Estonian independence.[1] A new building was constructed at a new site in 1967.
Today the theatre's repertoire consists mostly of drama, although once in every two years Endla hosts an opera music festival PromFest.

The Estonian Drama Theatre grew out of a school. The first Estonian drama school – Paul Sepp’s private studio – was founded in 1920. In 1924 the first graduates of the Drama Studio, which developed on the basis of that, founded the Drama Studio Theatre, which was renamed in 1937 as the Estonian Drama Theatre. Over the years the theatre has also had other names. For example, during the Soviet times it was known as the Tallinn National Drama Theatre, with various titles being added to this name (including an academic name that denoted top quality). Around the time when Estonia regained its independence the theatre also got its name back and once again became the Estonia Drama Theatre (1989).

Since the very beginning the theatre has operated in a beautiful Art-Nouveau style German theatre house, which is the oldest theatre house in Estonia (completed in 1910; many older theatre houses were destroyed during the World War II). In addition to the Big hall (426 seats), a small hall (170 seats) was built in the 1960s and the Paintshop hall(Maalisaal) (70 seats) was opened in 2004. Stage technology was updated and modernized in 2004 in the course of repair works and in 2009 the whole backstage area was also completely renovated.

The Estonian Drama Theatre is the biggest verbal theatre in Estonia; at the moment the permanent troupe consists of 37 actors and actresses and there are 5 permanent directors. Around 10 plays premier every season and more than 20 plays are constantly in the repertoire. During one year almost 500 performances are given and more than 100,000 people come to see the plays.

PolygonTheatre is a production unit which functions as a meeting forum for Estonian and international artists.

It is established 8th of May 2008 in Tallinn. Co-operation has been planned with various artists on different fields.

PolygonTheatre works on a widening field of arts. Aside from theatre, the group also produces movies, radio plays, music, workshops, performances and media art. We present “poor-theatre” movement, but at the same time PolygonTheatre is open-mindedly seeking for new forms and practices in the stage. The group is also interested of co-operation with artists from abroad and international projects.

In its projects, PolygonTheatre takes advantage of the wide contact networks of its members and aims at long and continuous collaboration with various artists and institutions. Performers and artists are hired on project-by-project basis. PolygonTheatre does not have a permanent residence. Venues for performances are provided by the co-operation partners.

PolygonTheatre has two permanent members: Artistic Director Tamur Tohver and Head of Production Tarvo Krall. The compactness of the core team and the way of working without their own theatre stage or premises, directly gives all resources for artistic work. Light structure guarantees the group a greater freedom, flexibility and mobility.
